Surya (Sun) — Jyotish Lecture Notes

1. Core Nature of Surya

Surya is the natural Aatmakaraka — the karaka of Aatma (a Jaimini Astrology concept where the highest degree planet is called Aatmakaraka).

Surya is Alive. Nothing else has more Energy, Power and Life than Surya. Surya controls life on the Earth; we are able to get food due to Sunlight.

Key Significations

Father, Government, Authority, Respect, Ego, Willpower, Responsibility.

Aditi (Surya's mother) asked for a child who will do Justice (Nyay) with Everyone, and she got Sun. She also did a sacrifice as she had to let him go after his marriage. So if Surya's mother can do so much sacrifice then Surya can also do so — it literally burns itself up to give out energy.

2. Surya's Character & Qualities

3 Planets are respected very much — Jupiter (Guru, Pandit), Sun (Leaders) & Mars (Army).

• Deeper Level — Self Respect is Surya. Whoever worries about their respect and is scared if someone said anything bad to them has a bad Sun.
• Societal Respect = Surya Respect. Sun is respected behind the backs also; if people talk bad behind someone's back, their Surya is bad.

"Putting hands on shoulders of others while talking" shows Surya's Prominent Qualities in the person.

Surya also represents Sanitizer — Sun's UV rays kill germs.

Wherever Surya sits, YOUR ATMA is there — mind works very fast at that place.

Surya has much heat in the body (Read Surya's Birth Story), therefore also represents fever or heat in the body.

Signs of a Good/Prominent Sun

• People who walk with Chest Wide Open show a prominent Sun.
• A person with a Good Sun will never disrespect or make fun of anyone in front of people, because a Good King always sees everyone with the same eyes. Sun treats everyone equally as its rays fall on all kinds of people and places, no matter their social status. That is why Surya was made the King and not anyone else.
• Surya knows when to give punishment at the correct time and not be lenient — how to discipline a person.
• Surya is a sharp mind.
• A person with a Prominent Surya will always keep people around him when he travels. Kaafila Surya ka hota hai.
• Good Surya will have high temper and the ability to control the people around him.

Signs of a Bad/Weak Sun

• Person walking with bad body posture — particularly the habit of humping down in front, bent shoulders, curving the spine — will make Surya bad.
• A person with good Surya, whenever they start making it bad, will always be instructed by his Father or anyone with authority on him.

3. Interpreting Planetary Placements

Simply a planetary placement in a bad house (6, 8, 12) doesn't mean it's all ruined. Yes, surely some Karakatva of the planet will be disturbed.

So basically, a bad planet doesn't mean all the significations of the planet will be bad. For Sun these are — Father, Digestion, Fame, Respect, Government. Will the person suffer from all of them$1 Obviously not!

Also, during different Dashas and transits, based on planetary positions, the affected areas might change — so one might have improved relations with Father, but is now in problem with the Government.

We will also see other planets, combinations and positions to understand what will be the final result — obviously we can't just keep on guessing blindly which part is bad or good.

Bad planets don't have any hate against you — they are positioned based on YOUR OWN Pending Karma, and now in this life you have to go through the tests. You can always make use of them too in some form or the other.

Also, Karma is irreplaceable — one has to perform their duties with no excuses. But Astrology gives us a particular direction and also provides certain shortcuts along the way to make the journey a bit easier or faster. But it's the same like walking out in a Burning Hot Summer day with gusts of hot winds thrashing on your face. You might find some shortcuts to reach your destination quickly, you might get some shades of trees or buildings along the way, if you were smart you might have had an umbrella or light towel to cover your head, but in the end, you will have to walk the path yourself and can't keep on standing and crying.

Never try to say things while predicting for someone in order to impress them, because every time the predictions will come true the person will be remembering you.

General Rules for Sun

• Surya is medicine — as fever inside the body is naturally for the purpose to kill germs and protect the person. If a person with Bad Sun gives medicine, people won't be cured easily.
• Bad Sun will make the person not be able to get fame, referrals from others.
• Surya is Digestion — bad Sun = bad digestion.
• ALWAYS Fix Any Planet Emotionally First, then Physically. For Surya, this means treating and seeing everyone as equal, regardless of their social status, looks, etc.
• How to know if any planet is good or bad$2 If you are able to get the work done of the house the planet is sitting in, then the planet is good (even Rahu Ketu). For example, if Rahu is in 6th house and you are able to win a competition, then it's working well.
• Wherever Sun goes, the person has to take responsibility of that house — the person's ego resides in that house, and the house specifications also get the Sun's qualities which are to help others socially.

4. Surya in the Houses

Surya in 1st House

If in any case a quality mentioned doesn't appear in the person or is in an opposite condition, it means Sun is not working well for this person. In majority (98%) of cases Sun will be good for this position — the other 2% includes Rahu/Ketu effect which will be discussed later.

Not everything is good or bad — we make things good or bad based on our opinion or societal POV. For example, hair fall or blood from nose (prominent signs of Sun in 1st house) simply means Sun is showing its presence/influence in the 1st house; it doesn't mean it's bad or good.

Rahu — if your paternal Grandfather is chilling and going well in life, then your Rahu is good.

Physical & Health Traits

• This person will suffer from Pitt Dosh, and allergies related to that. Fiery planets — Sun & Mars — give us Pitt Dosh.
• Person will have a Squarish Face and Body shape.
• Body has extra energy — can't sit at home at one place for long time without work.
• Person will not be able to sleep late — doesn't matter what time they sleep or how tired they are, they will always try to wake up early and will naturally wake up early.

Personality Traits

• This person is ready to help everyone.
• Person will be having Ego issues because he tends to give more importance to his own words.
• Pehla ghar Gaddi hai, Raja ab Gaddi par baitha hai.
• Haar nahi maanega — ya to fight/dispute suljha ke aayega, ya to maar peet ke aayega.
• Chhaati Chaudi karke chalega (if not, then Sun is working bad).
• Always wants to say his thing first, and won't be listening to others easily — considers his words as the truth, because he's the King.
• Ye log kisi kamre enter karte time Door frame (Chaukhat) ka oopri hissa chhoote hain, ya inhe oopar koodke chhatt, pankha chhoone ki aadat hoti hai.
• Ye Insaan Jan-hit ke liye kaam karta hai.
• The name of the person might be something fiery — Oorja, Usha, Jwala, etc.
• Person might have a hobby of Gardening.

Surya in 2nd House

• Father will have a very important role in his life — pending karma with Father; Father's words will have meaning for him.
• This person is sent to help others with some God gifted talent of communication, writing, or anything.
• Body Temperature a little bit higher than normal.
• Pitt Dosh — When Fire Element is Increased and due to which water element is reduced, resulting in Rashes, Hot head, hair fall, baldness at young age, blood from nose.
• Jiske kaam ke liye jaayega, uska kaam karwaake hi aayega.
• First child will be a son in majority of cases.
• A lot of people will know this person in the society (either for good or bad reasons) — and this person will also know many people and have respect for them.

Fame — An Important Distinction

• Whenever this person is in down phases of life, they will bounce back quickly and not fall down easily.
• Family responsibility will be on this person. (If they like it — Sun's Good; if not — it's Bad.)
• Aankhein kamzor hongi (2nd House rules Eyes).
• Khana time se nhi milega to gussa aayega.
• Ya to family me log sunenge ya to nahi sunenge. Agar family me bohot chalti hai, sab darte hain isse to Aankhein kharab hongi, or vice versa.

Sun and Venus are enemies — Taurus lies in 2nd house. If a King indulges in pleasures of life, then he won't be King for long. That's why it gives Ego issues, as this person's problems can't be understood by many people — the crown he wears on his head comes with great responsibilities. Ego ko Family ke ghar me baitha dena is not good.

• Whenever this person speaks it might appear that he is not talking rather ordering — if that is happening, then Surya is good. When he asks for help it might look like he's doing some favor to you by asking.
• Surya in 1st or 2nd House person won't be able to ask for Help easily.
• Authoritative Tone — Example: "Enjoy your next day" sounds fun, but "Enjoy your Next 24 hours" sounds like a threat. That's the tone of this person.
• Person won't be able to use their own money — there will definitely come a time when you would have to spend your money on relatives, and family will take your money.

Surya in 3rd House

• Family won't praise much this person even after getting money — might do it a bit one or two times, but on the contrary might say more bad about the person.
• Very Disciplined while Driving — nobody drives with more responsibility than this person. Follows traffic rules by heart. If Saturn is also involved, the person will NEVER break any traffic rule.
• Subconsciously person will be thinking whom they could help.
• Responsibility of the siblings — even after their marriage they might take care of them and help them in multiple ways.
• Very Time Disciplined & Punctual (more if Saturn is involved). Will get angry if anyone wastes their time.
• Siblings will be in much pain. And the native won't help them until the last moment — which is the test they have to go through; it's their regret that they could have helped their sibling. Sun keeps distance from people and tries to wait until the very last when the other is in absolute need. That's why Sun has guilt that it could have helped but it didn't.
• Siblings' elder (or male) child will also get help from this person.
• Person will be Blunt/Outspoken (मुँहफट) — when marrying, the person will tell everything about himself and his family to the partner, even more than what's required. Saamaajik baatein karega.
• Person will write either beautifully or use threatening/authoritative words in writing.
• Person might write or maintain documentation for powerful/influential people — PA related work. Even IAS is also like a PA for ministers, so keep this in mind.
