Rahu and Ketu Will Never Let You Live a Normal Life; Why$1

In the astrological world, most planets are well known. The Sun is authority, the Moon is the mind, Jupiter is wisdom and Venus is relationships and comforts. But, there is a huge difference between Rahu and Ketu. The North and South nodes are known as the North and South nodes of the moon and are known as shadow planets since there is no body or identity to them. They never do things independently. Rather, they take the characteristics of the sign, house and planets that they connect with and exaggerate and/or diminish them to extremes. Hence it is said that this is the reason why Rahu and Ketu are termed as Hindal or Aaghat as they are in the background yet they have profound effect on the events.

The Nature of the Nodes

Extreme, Not Ordinary

The first and foremost thing to note is that Rahu and Ketu seldom give ordinary effects. They are extreme in nature. These shadow planets will tend to make things bigger than they really are, and other planets will have an acceptable level of balance. The lecture notes also provide an explanation for retrograde planets that they work in a similar fashion and that they are expressing their significations at one end or the other. So, those who have strong Rahu, Ketu or retrograde planets tend to have lives that are somewhat unusual, unconventional and very different from others' lives.

Head and Body

Rahu and Ketu are always joined but their attitude towards life is exactly opposite. Rahu is the head; it is intelligent, curious and is in constant search of thinking, analysing and questioning all. It always looks for new experiences, new achievement, new possibilities. Ketu, on the other hand, is the body without a head. It does not use logic in the same fashion. Rather, it operates on instinct, intuition, and what the notes refer to as a "sixth sense." Rahu likes to reason about the world while Ketu knows it just by experiencing it. This contrast is why it is known that Rahu brings about overthinking and Ketu brings about indifference towards things that no longer excite the soul.

Core Differences in Motivation and Behavior

Deepest Motivations

There is a stark difference also in their deepest motivations. Rahu is motivated by fame, success and worldly accomplishments. It desires to rise, to have influence and to experience all things that life has to offer. Ketu is looking for something pretty different. It appreciates tranquility, inner fulfillment and detachment from any worldly attachment.

A simple example is given: If Rahu and Ketu were confined in the same room, Rahu will do everything to get out of the room, and Ketu would take it quietly and start meditating. This example beautifully depicts their contrasting psychology, where Rahu is always looking for change, while Ketu is always looking for acceptance.

Communication Styles

This is also evident in the way we communicate. Rahu speaks very little. It loves explanations, details, stories and multiple perspectives. Sometimes too much information is given and it is hard to see what the original point is. Ketu does just the opposite. May interrupt speaking in mid-sentence, may not complete sentences, may assume that others already know what they are trying to convey. One is too explicit and the other is not explicit enough. Both are unbalanced forms of communication.

Parenting Patterns

These differences are again elaborated upon in the context of parenting in the lecture. The mother may have erratic mood changes, go from loving one moment to angry the next, due to Rahu. The constant changes result in uncertainty for the child as they never know what they are going to get. In contrast, a Ketu mother might be strict or harsh from time-to-time, but her conduct is relatively consistent over a longer duration. The focus isn't on which is better, but on how Rahu can be erratic and how Ketu is the end (consistent).

Persuasion, Religion, and Spirituality

Persuasion and Motivation

The nodes have very different opinions in persuasion. Rahu can be influenced as it is seeking material gains like wealth, beauty, luxury and recognition. Never feels satisfied with what it has and is always looking to get more. Ketu is very difficult to convince, it is not very motivated to receive external rewards. Its content is left alone and separate. Likewise, Rahu tends to talk a lot about issues and persuade others, whereas Ketu tends to be succinct and prefers action over words. This distinction is the reason why Rahu is usually considered associated with networking and having a public voice, while Ketu naturally has an aversion to solitude and independence.

Religion and Spirituality

Another interesting comparison is that of religion and spirituality. From the notes, Rahu is ready for several belief systems. It tries out things, asks questions, puts down opinions and looks into different traditions for knowledge. Ketu behaves differently. It avoids walking on all possible avenues rather it chooses a path that is based on one truth or develops its own truth from direct experience. Similarly, Rahu generally fits in and is a part of society, while Ketu tends to stay in its own little world and withdraw from expectations of society.

Liberation of the Soul

Although Rahu and Ketu are opposite in nature, both impart the liberation of soul in their own way. Sometimes, Rahu can completely grasp the worldly desires to an extreme and the person gets so immersed in the material that he/she realizes that his material success is not enough to bring him/her happiness and peace. In contrast, Ketu can take the opposite approach, bringing the person to focus on the inside, to detach from attachments. In both the aim is the same: self-understanding, but the method is different.

The Remedy: Donation

This section ends with a lecture that reminds us that donation is one of the most common treatments for both nodes. Selfless giving can be done in these five ways: time, effort, knowledge, money and service, and this neutralizes the intensity of Rahu and Ketu. Both are shadow planets that operate behind the scenes, unobtrusively serving the needs of others, which is very similar to their deeper symbolic roles.

Example

Suppose that two students are competing for the same competitive exam.

The first student is a hard worker who wants to get the best rank, recognition and career success. They are never satisfied even when they are successful, and are always thinking of the next success. This is Rahu's nature – always wanting more and always wanting to rise.

The second student has a sincere interest in studying but slowly loses his focus on ranking and external validation. They enjoy the knowledge and process of the content, not the comparison of others. This is characteristic of Ketu – detachment and the fulfillment from within.

Both ways are not completely correct or incorrect. They are two karmic energy flows which are described in the lecture as opposing.
